Futurology

Futures studies (also called futurology) is the study of postulating possible, probable, and preferable futures and the worldviews and myths that underlie them. There is a debate as to whether this discipline is an art or science. In general, it can be considered as a branch of the social sciences and parallel to the field of history. History studies the past, futures studies considers the future.

Social Entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship is the use of the techniques by start up companies and other entrepreneurs to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues. This concept may be applied to a variety of organizations with different sizes, aims, and beliefs. For-profit entrepreneurs typically measure performance using business metrics like profit, revenues and increases in stock prices, but social entrepreneurs are either non-profits or blend for-profit goals with generating a positive "return to society" and therefore must use different metrics. Social entrepreneurship typically attempts to further broad social, cultural, and environmental goals often associated with the voluntary sector in areas such as poverty alleviation, health care and community development.

Post-Scarcity Economics

Post-scarcity is an economic theory in which most goods can be produced in great abundance with minimal human labor needed, so that they become available to all very cheaply or even freely. Post-scarcity is not generally taken to mean that scarcity has been eliminated for all consumer goods and services; instead, it is often taken to mean that all people can easily have their basic survival needs met along with some significant proportion of their desires for goods and services.

The Calling of Space

"We were hunters and foragers. The frontier was everywhere. We were bounded only by the earth, and the ocean, and the sky. The open road still softly calls. Our little terraqueous globe as the madhouse of those hundred thousand millions of worlds. We, who cannot even put our own planetary home in order, riven with rivalries and hatreds; are we to venture out into space?

By the time we are ready to settle even the nearest other planetary systems, we will have changed. The simple passage of so many generations will have changed us; necessity will have changed us. We are… an adaptable species. It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri and the other nearby stars. It will be a species very like us, but with more of our strengths, and fewer of our weaknesses; more confident, farseeing, capable and prudent.

For all our failings, despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness. What new wonders undreamt of in our time, will we have wrought in another generation, and another? How far will our nomadic species have wandered, by the end of the next century, and the next millennium?

Our remote descendants, safely arrayed on many worlds through the solar system, and beyond, will be unified, by their common heritage, by their regard for their home planet, and by the knowledge that, whatever other life may be, the only humans in all the universe, come from Earth. They will gaze up and strain to find the blue dot in their skies. They will marvel at how vulnerable the repository of all our potential once was, how perilous our infancy, how humble our beginnings, how many rivers we had to cross, before we found our way."

Science & Reason VS Conspiracy & Faith

In the last year I had many heated debates with fellow social activists of all sorts. Even when these activists freed themselves from the influence of institutional religion, they weren't free from dogmatic, faith- and ignorance-based thinking.

It took a long time, but I found the courage to separate myself from movements and people with dogmatic views and conspiracies about the economy, the elites, science institutes and generally simply refuting the status quo of modern institutions as a nearly absolute principle. While it is useful and even necessary to be skeptical and confront the all parts of the current system, an attitude of immediate "ad hominem" or "anti-appeal to authority" can be very toxic and nihilistic.

While it's true that nihilism in itself is not just a negative side of life to get acquainted to, I saw a surrender to nihilism as an excuse for non-activity and weakness. When approached with random disillusionment with the whole of the status quo, nihilism can become a handicap. When approached with education and philosophy, nihilism can become a strength.

Below I'm posting useful video playlists about: Skepticism, The Scientific Method, Nihilism and a few important formal Scientific Disciplines.

Positive Psychology

Positive psychology is "the scientific study of what makes life most worth living", or "the scientific study of positive human functioning and flourishing on multiple levels that include the biological, personal, relational, institutional, cultural, and global dimensions of life". Positive psychology is concerned with eudaimonia, "the good life", reflection about what holds the greatest value in life – the factors that contribute the most to a well-lived and fulfilling life.

Fitness

I became a big fan of Fitness fairly recently: in 2013. Till then I never gave enough value to physical activity. Once I discovered reading on positive psychology and other encouraging philosophical reads, I became impassioned about fitness, physical transformation and the mental benefits of regular activity.

My favorite sport activities: Jogging, HIIT, Weightlifting, Martial Arts

Spiral Dynamics

Spiral Dynamics is a data-based, psychological approach to understanding worldviews or systems of thinking held by individuals, organisations and societies. It is concerned with:

  • how people to respond to the world around them in given circumstances and with their particular coping abilities (rather than categorising people as ‘types’)
  • how people think about things (conceptualisation), rather than what they think about (concepts) – for example, is their thinking binary and absolutist (‘if it’s not black, then it must be white’), or do they acknowledge and seem comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty?
  • complex questions about change including ‘HOW should WHO lead WHOM to do WHAT and WHEN?’

The Integral Man

In recent times I often felt a missing connection with my true self and I felt the dogmatic attack of third wave feminism on manhood at large. Through the discovery of spiritual and psychology books I found value in reclaiming my own masculinity.

Both masculinity and femininity can be toxic when pushed to the extreme, and I have witnessed both extensively. Equality is not sameness. We can all be equals while still being different and even enjoying the interplay between these differences.

Masculinity (manhood or manliness) is a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles associated with boys and men. It is distinct from the definition of the male biological sex. Both males and females can exhibit masculine traits and behavior.

Traits traditionally cited as masculine include courage, independence and assertiveness.

These traits vary by location and context, and are influenced by social and cultural factors.

At the end personal taste is what really dictates what people find entertaining, but I believe that some TV shows and especially movies are undoubtedly conveyors of great ideas. Ideas about revolutionprogresschangepersonal developmentappreciationhappiness and meaning are only a few of the big ideas that can be inspired from intelligent entertainment.
